YES, THE FOLLOWING IS NOTHING MORE THAN A SELF-IMPORTANT BLOG POST WRITTEN TO PUT OFF WORKING ON AN ACTUAL NOVEL.
You’re still here?
My writing ‘career’ has never been about quantity over quality. Yes, some people say that the best way to sell more books is to write more books and sooner or later your audience will find you. Personally, I’m more of a write-a-few-above-average-novels-die-THEN-get-noticed kind of guy. I’m gonna let you in on a little secret of mine, ready?
There’s only like five novels that I actually plan to write.
And, while I have you here I’ve got one more confession: THE was never meant to be one of those five novels. To be blunt: I kind of despise THE as a novel. Oh, it’s a fun read and all, but it was originally intended to be a series of really fucked up events shared with my writer buddies – and it reads like it. There’s no real explanation behind the events of the novel – no background – absolutely NO foundation at all.
But, I listened to that age-old advice. “Just get it out there. Write more and they will come.” I published it, then I realized something: There’s still a bunch more in this story that needs to be expanded on. So, THE2 (and quite possibly) THE3 were born. Fifty pages in and it hit me…
“I’ve written this story before.”
QUICK FLASHBACK: Picture it – the fall of 2000! I’m stuck in a beautiful Victorian home (now burned to the ground) in the middle of upstate New York. I’m drinking a bottle of scotch a night. I’m writing away on my great American novel – A PLACE IN THE WOODS.
Then, life happened.
Now, it’s damn near 17 years later, and that same story is haunting me. Without giving away too much I can say that the themes and characters (everyday man battles forces of evil to save small town/ good and evil are all subjective terms etc. ) I was putting into the pages of THE 2 were similar to this earlier manuscript. I’ve spent the past few months in some serious introspection as to whether or not keep going with THE 2 or scrap it completely.
Well, the ax has fallen.
I felt that the story of A PLACE IN THE WOODS (title will probably be changed when all is said and done) didn’t quite fit into the profane, amateurish world of THE. It deserved its own treatment and focus.
THE2 is dead.
A PLACE IN THE WOODS is a story that’s been in my brain for almost twenty years and it’s time to put it all down on paper – every dark, disturbing detail. Don’t ask about a release date, because I don’t have one.
As for the other novels? They exist in every form from a few outlined notes to a hundred plus pages finished. Each novel is a different genre and aspect to my seriously defunct brain.
If I’m still alive when they’re finished maybe I’ll have time to sell the tv rights.
